NEDO's SBIR program accepting applications until May 31, 2024.

The New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) in Japan has opened applications for the 2024 Small/Startup Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, aiming to foster innovation and tackle diverse societal challenges through research and development by startups and other entities. This year's program, which runs from April 30 to May 31, 2024, is particularly notable for its comprehensive approach, encapsulating both conceptual proofs (POC) and feasibility studies (FS) in Phase 1 and supporting the actual application of research in Phase 2.

Program Details:

Phase 1: Supports foundational research necessary for commercialization, including proofs of concept and feasibility studies, with funding up to 20 million yen per project.

Phase 2: Aids in the development of practical applications from successful Phase 1 projects, with grants up to 150 million yen, covering up to two-thirds of the project costs.

This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Japanese government to stimulate scientific and technological creativity across a spectrum of industries. NEDO’s SBIR program operates under the guidance of the Cabinet Office, with cross-ministerial collaboration ensuring that the projects align with Japan’s strategic goals in science and technology.
